Ep. 009: Complete Basketball Preparation w/ Brian McGill

In episode 009, I’m joined by Portland-based performance coach, Brian McGill to talk about his approach to basketball preparation. Brian is a former basketball standout himself, having an all-league collegiate career at the University of Alaska Anchorage that eventually lead him to his professional debut in Germany. After his hoops career, Brian immediately jumped back into coaching and training where he is currently making an impact on the game as a basketball coach, sports performance trainer and assisting athletes with on-court work as well.

In this episode, we discuss his basketball journey and how he started his career. We then move into a conversation about coaching basketball, hitting on topics like defense, communication and relationship building. Beyond that, we look into his complete approach to training some of the best basketball players in the world, from the weight room to the court.

Brian works with athletes from the NBA, EuroLeague, EuroCup and NBA G-League. He’s also an assistant basketball coach at the Portland powerhouse, West Linn High School, where he works with several high-level recruits in their development. This is a great conversation about the state of basketball, as a sport and as a business industry, as well as some tactical & technical ways you can get more out of your training with your athletes.
